a Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi + Wiradjuri writer, director and performer building ancestral futurist pop mythology and genre-driven worlds where Indigenous stories rewrite history, reclaim popular culture and imagine new futures.
ANCESTRAL FUTURIST POP MYTHOLOGY
HORROR. SCI-FI. ROMANCE. POP. THE GENRES WE WERE TOLD WE DIDN'T BELONG IN.
I don't accept colonial timelines as fact. My work remixes archive, memory and mythology to reveal the truths underneath — and puts Indigenous stories everywhere we were told we didn't belong.
Past, present and future aren't separate places. These stories move through ancestral memory and future dreaming and everything between. We don't imagine the future. We remember it.
The Receipts
aka biography…
Alethea Beetson is a Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi + Wiradjuri writer, director and performer. She wrote and directed the theatre show Queen's City (Brisbane Festival, Blak Social, QPAC + Screen Queensland), the flagship of this practice, and Losing It, a short film adapted from her own stage work and screened at Gold Coast Film Festival and Maoriland Film Festival. She has also adapted and directed Alexis Wright's Carpentaria for Brisbane Writers Festival. Her most recent theatre production, Meet Your Maker, which she wrote, directed and performed, premiered in 2023 and featured 50 minutes of original cinema woven through the live performance, winning a Matilda Award for Best Video Design.
Alongside her theatre and screen practice, Alethea has spent over a decade working across the music industry - as a First Nations Music Curator and Producer for Brisbane Festival, BIGSOUND, Horizon Festival, Yonder and Jungle Love, and as founder of BLAKSOUND, a First Nations-led music conference. Blak Social premiered Gatekeepers at Sydney Opera House in 2024. She is currently Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program Lead at Spotify Australia & New Zealand.
In 2013 Alethea founded Digi Youth Arts, leading it for a decade to create pathways for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to author their own work. She is now Creative Director of Blak Social, the First Nations company she founded to take that methodology further - building interconnected worlds across film, theatre, music and live experience. Digi Youth Arts builds artists; Blak Social builds worlds.
Alethea holds a Doctorate of Creative Industries and is a 2022 Sidney Myer Fellow.
